Nope, it's not THAT old!! [laugh] (That's 1950 for those who don't know how ancient Mike is!!!) [biggrin]

1953 then, and the name was .....er......Alice?

Well done, Mike - both correct.

Originally, hurricanes were named after the saint on who's day the hurricane started. Prior to 1953 there was a two year period where hurricanes were named using the old phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog etc) but this had its obvious flaws in that each year hurricanes were given the same name! Hurricanes were first named using women's names in 1953, men's names were introduced in 1978. Now, the National Hurricane Center issues lists of names to be used on a 6 year cycle, so this year's list will be used again in 2014.

Everything you never wanted to know about hurricane names and were too bored to ask!!!! [wacko]

Over to you Mike.

Wow, pure guess....

Okay, back to US Presidents.....

The 18th President of the United States was Ulysses S. Grant. He was actually born Hiram Ulysses Grant but adopted the "S" while at Westpoint Academy. What did the "S" stand for?

For a bonus point(?) his wife, the First Lady, shared a first name with one of the members of Berkshire SAR Dogs. What was her name?

Good luck.

Mike

Was Ulysses S. Grant an aircraft carrier?
The 1st lady Nobby? [unsure]

It may well have been, but I think the "S" would have still meant the same!!

I'm not sure what you're trying to imply about Nobby!!!
