Well done, Mike - both correct.
Originally, hurricanes were named after the saint on who's day the hurricane started. Prior to 1953 there was a two year period where hurricanes were named using the old phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog etc) but this had its obvious flaws in that each year hurricanes were given the same name! Hurricanes were first named using women's names in 1953, men's names were introduced in 1978. Now, the National Hurricane Center issues lists of names to be used on a 6 year cycle, so this year's list will be used again in 2014.
Everything you never wanted to know about hurricane names and were too bored to ask!!!!
Over to you Mike.
