Ok, maths next.

What velocity would an object have if it were to be dropped from a height of 509.584m (take gravity as 9.81m/s).

Is it in a vacuum, or the atmosphere. If the latter what is the atmospheric pressure on the particular day that the item is dropped. Also what is the wind speed?................ [tongue2]

Given the standard velocity formula air pressure and mass are not taken into account, only gravity is the constant.

I believe the formula you are thinking about is the terminal velocity formula (I wouldnt be that nasty).... [wub]

Actually since gravity is an acceleration value shouldn't it be 9.81 m/s/s (or 32.2 ft/s/s in my day [closedeyes] )?

I guess there's two possible answers to this....

a) 100 m/s; or
b) zero ('cos it's hit the ground and stopped!! [biggrin] )

Correct Mike,

The standard velocity formula is root2gh.

Giving a velocity of 99.99m/s, or 100m/s rounded up.

PS. Its 9.81m/s(squared) and is not actually the value of gravity as it is squared, but is in fact the value of acceleration due to gravity.

You are of course correct in your terminology, it is indeed acceleration. [rolleyes]

Thanks....I guess it's back to me then.

I can remember Apollo 1 being a fire tragedy before launch but I dont even remember how many Apollo Missions there were.

Guess Apollo 11

I'm sure Apollo 7 was the first crewed mission - as to a year, no idea - about 1967...

Shame I missed the gravity one - although no one mentioned at what time after it was dropped?

Correct on the 1st part Robert, it was indeed Apollo7, but slightly out on the year. Any guesses?

As regards Pete's gravity question it is a standard formula as Pete said. i.e. Velocity = root 2gh. You have g (9.81 m/s/s) and h (509.584m), just multiply them together, times 2 and then take the sqare root.

You can of course work out the time from that.
