Clare

What Pete is saying is that we can be used for the location of deceased humans (and parts of), but would not be used in known criminal cases where home office licenced forensic dogs would be used.

This has been the case from the start.

Thanks for your reply Daryl, I'll carry on with Hopalong's training (to tell the truth, I was anyway!) The confusion arose as I am not aware of whatever the 'recent events' Pete referred to in his post.

Hello to everyone, i am a newbie on the forum and would love to seek some advice on human remains/victim recovery dog training.
What i cannot fathom is how Home Office licensed dogs trained in human remains detection are never imprinted with the scent of human remains during training?????? I am led to believe that pigs (and parts thereof ) are used for this purpose.
Does this not mean that in fact these dogs who are trained to detect pig remains in varying stages of decompostion should be labelled pig detection dogs!!!! ...... and not human remains detection dogs!!!!

Does anyone know the reason why this is so? I know in USA for example that HR Dogs are trained on cadavers (and parts) and they routinely proof the dogs scent discrimination ability using other animal scent/parts present in the search area.

Does anyone have knowledge of what the UK authorities views on the provision and aquisition of body matter is for the use in training of dogs which are to be used in this role?

Sorry if this is so obvious to all but as said i am new here!!!!!

thanks

chris.

Hi Chris

Quite simply the use of Human tissue of any form in the UK for this purpose is strictly prohibited due to the Human Tissue Act 2004 link hence the reason why we use the nearest equivalent - pigs!

Hope this helps a little and welcome to the forum.

Mike pops in every now and then and has a Home Office qualified dog. He might be able to put some meat on this (no pun intended, honest!) to further clarify matters.
