Given these two situations I would do the following:

Misper located by dog team -

Misper health and well-being comes first, dispite what is done in training I would (and have).

1. Check the casualties condition.
2. Report to control with the relevant information.
3. Control the scene.
4. Extract from the area.
5. Reward the dog enthusiastically.
6. Use my support to set up a short runaway problem and allow the dog a text book search/reward.

Misper not located by dog team -

You must give the dog a reward.

1. Use my support to set up a short runaway exercise so the dog still gets a find and reward.
2. Report back to control having kenneled the dog, if no kenneling available then have my support control the dog whilst I de-brief control.
3. Get home quickly for a brew and bath!!

I would do things in a slightly different order;

Misper located by dog team -

1. Support rewards the dog enthusiastically out of the area whilst I check the casualties condition.
2. Support looks after K9 welfare whilst I report to control with the relevant information.
3. Control the scene.
4. Extract from the area.

Maybe I would do it this way because I am a SAR Manager, Team Leader, Dog Handler and a State Registered Paramedic?

That's an interesting theory Niki as an SM.

I quite like it especially if the handler is the TL, if not though, the support (TL) in my very limited experience should control the scene??? Or is that an ALSAR point of view with regards to TL's controlling situ?

Casualty will always come first for you definately as a SRP, obligations hey who'd have them [wink]

ALL of us must not forget though, we come first with regards to H&S an Welfare - then the misper. Even I overlook this at times, were volunteers at the end of the day who are commited to SAR and have therefore made an informal/unwritten contract. Maybe I'm stating the obvious - so sorry in advance.

Niki we defo need to chat in regards to Search Management & Dogs, singing from the same hymm sheet - fantastic. Glass of wine/brandy on Sat???

You are quite right Jo I was talking on a personal level. But if I had a team where the support was TL then I would expect them to take charge of the scene whilst the handler took care of the dog.

I know exactly what you mean about seracher H&S coming first. Even at work we often have to remind ourselves that we come first. Try saying who will rescue the rescuer? That gets people thinking.


Will gladly meet up for a chat about SAR Mgmt and dogs. Unfortunately I am working from 3pm Saturday til 1am Sunday but will definitely arrange meeting for a chat soon. In the mean time if you have any queries you wanna run past me feel free either here, PM or MSN.

As a non-dog person (but still trying!),

Where is the fine line drawn at what behaviour is considered playful or considered aggressive?

And if it's body language, is it possible for a few suggestions? I have tried taking the situation into account and surroundings, etc but I'm still failing to find the answer.

I'm trying to understand this fine line, but does it physically take a dog to bite to be classed as aggressive?

I am trying to look at the big picture, especially when dogs are used within a multi discipline team as we currently have. Combining the dogs within the team itself (not a seperate unit) is working well without the elitism, but overall, I'm trying to highlight potential issues/problems and iron them out whilst were training and not on a call-out.

Hope that somehow makes sense
