Its definately worth going back a step!
Without a good alert, you might as well not have a search dog. This is something that I had to do as I followed the ARDA manual that dosent teach the alert till near the end. I now teach it at about step 2 or 3, and if the alert gets lost we go back to alert training and start all over again!
As frustrating as it is, it needs to be done!
