Newbie and Trek

Postby treksdad » Tue Apr 21, 2009 3:10 pm

I am a Newbie probationer, and I am seeking advice, My early efforts have showed promise, but I have now hit a brick wall, my mispers are missing, I am having to improvise.
Trek has got wise to my game of hiding seek and is usually two paces in front of me when I run and hide.
I really need some inspiration on how to train my dog on my own, I am sure it can be done, true to his terrier breed he can change games to suit himself, he now hides the ball and I search for it while he stands in the background whistling, Might be a pack leader problem?
I had a misper for five days and I was very heartened by the work he did, not only spot on with the short finds but he did three airscent finds, and two ground scent finds, at this stage I did wonder at trailing, but as a novice it would be very helpful to get some good advice.
Any replies gratefully recieved.

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

Are you part of Berkshire SAR Dogs or elsewhere in the country?

Ideally you would have someone else to help train with you. But if all else fails make a child size dummy and dress it in a VERY smelly T-Shirt. We find that this works with all disciplines. If you want any instructions on how to make one send me a message and I can forward these on.

If you ever thought your dog can't count, try putting 3 dog biscuits in your pocket and only giving him 2!!!

Thankyou Niki,
I know he can count, i have tried putting balls in diferent pockets but he knows how many I have got.
I am with Berkshire SARD, I would like to take you up on your offer to tell me how to make up a dummy.
Thankyou for your help.

Treksdad

I am just about to enable your permissions so that you can see the Probation members section. When your in there start by doing a bit of an introduction.

You can also post that you want to go training in this section

You know the first time I came across this site, and before I read the contents deeply, I thought this was about people who rescued dogs…  Then somewhere along the page, I realized that my comprehension and reading went one way and the page went another way. So I went back and started again. Quite foolish I agree, but then of course I went to inevitable wikipedia read session and learnt all about Search and Rescue Dogs.
